Northern Integrated Commercial Fisheries Initiative (NICFI)
The Northern Integrated Commercial Fisheries Initiative (NICFI) helps Indigenous communities build fisheries and aquaculture capacity, create jobs, and strengthen long-term economic and governance outcomes.
The Northern Integrated Commercial Fisheries Initiative (NICFI) is a capacity-building program co-designed to support eligible Indigenous communities and groups to:
Create jobs and meaningful employment
Build knowledge and skills to manage commercial fishing enterprises and aquaculture operations
Access training to fish and produce fish safely and effectively operate vessels
Increase economic returns from fisheries and aquaculture for the benefit of local communities
Over time, the program helps Indigenous participants build strong commercial fishing and aquaculture governance structures and develop the capacity to independently meet future administration and training requirements.
